Improve Self-Image to Reach Potential

We Don’t Use All Our Potential

While it is true that some people do have natural inherent talent, most people do not achieve the use of more than a minute fraction of their potential ability. Given equal natural talent, those that become great do so because they have learned to use a higher proportion of their potential.

Society Constrains Potential

How a person feels about themselves is often determined by their value which society attributes to them, and so we fit ourselves into peg holes as “valuable” even though we’re not doing what fits us, what brings us to actualize our potential.

Moshé Feldenkrais was a Ukrainian-Israeli engineer and physicist, known as the founder of the Feldenkrais Method, a system of physical exercise that aims to improve human functioning by increasing self-awareness through movement.

He trained in the 4th Way school and developed extensive exercises which bring people to spontaneity.

In Awareness Through Movement, he writes

“It is important to understand that if a man wishes to improve his self-image, he must first of all value himself as an individual, even if his faults as a member of society appear to him to outweigh his qualities.”

More Development is Possible

He goes on to point out that even further development occurs when a person becomes more conscious of different parts of their body.  But his approach is built on changing the whole self-image. He says,

” . . . systematic correction of the self-image will be a quicker and more efficient approach than the correction of single actions and error in modes of behavior, . . . ”

The improvements which come from using the exercises in Awareness Through Movement improve the general dynamics of the self-image like playing on a piano which is tuned verses one which is not.

Reverse Your Direction

Push on Through to the Other Side

When on the road to enlightenment, or success, or accomplishment a person comes to a what might be called, so to speak, a threshold where afterward there is no turning back. A commitment has been made. Full speed ahead. Put your nose to the grindstone, pedal to the metal. Success! Onward and upward. Analyze.  Arrange! Actualize!  Just do it. Right!

Gurus Agree

They say, “Use your determination! Stick with it!”

Not all of them do. Some point out that the main cause of failure actually is attachment. One has to ask themselves, “How many times am I going to put this ‘Three-legged horse’ into the race? You’ve bet your life savings, hocked the credit card and sold the family jewels to get in the race. It has to work! When do you stop? Can a person reverse direction on a dime?

The Greatest Idea of All Time

That may be a good name for the ‘Three-legged horse’ on which you’ve bet your life, because the secret of the Internet, of successful Internet business, is to quickly change directions by starting, re-starting ideas, and getting rid of the dogs you’re racing.  . . . which you’ve created because of attachment.  Your idea is a dog if you’ve been working too long and getting no where. But, but . . .  the idea is your baby.  You can’t change now.

The Rules of the Internet

Are the same as NLP–Neural Linguistic Programming–created by Grinder and Bandler–which has as it’s basic tenet: If it doesn’t work, try something else. Maybe it’s time to let go and reverse direction. This next exercise increases your creativity as it releases the attachment to fixed ideas. It’s simple, but by doing it you might get rid of the ‘mudders’ and ‘three-legged’ horses you’ve been racing and discover you’re a real winner . . . or even that it’s not a race but a lazy afternoon siesta.

Consider some everyday life situation, object, or activity as if they were exactly the opposite of what you normally take them to be. Imagine yourself in a situation the reverse of your own, where you act exactly contrary to what you do now. Observe actions, and thoughts, and feelings as if they were totally reversed. Don’t condemn or judge them. Simply reverse them in your mind’s eye.

For example, if you fed your dog or cat this morning, imagine what it would be like if your pet fed you. What if instead of going to work, your work came to you? If you’re married and have kids, what would life be like if you were the kid and your kids were your parent?

Unleash Instinctual Vitality

Capture Vitality

How Do We Become More Vital? defines vitality as exuberant physical strength or mental vigor. a person of great vitality has the capacity for survival or for the continuation of a meaningful or purposeful existence. Vitality is the power to live or grow.

So How Do We Get Great Vitality?

Wait! Wait  a minute. I’m not happy with that definition. We can’t define “vitality” by defining it as “great vitality.”  But for sure, we know it when we see it. Someone walks into a room and everyone turns. Who’s this striding to the forefront? What’s that special quality? It’s not exactly “savoir fare” which means to speak appropriately; it’s closer to “Joie de vivre” which means joy for life. But really, it’s more like an internal feeling which is being transmitted to you from them. You can’t help yourself; your attention is drawn to them.

Link to Great Vitality.

In his seminal book Movements of Power, Bob Klein writes:

To put it very simply, the individual human body is but one level on which you exist. It is a point you can focus on. The interplay of attention and creativity can move to other physical objects and to other kinds of experiences. The animating of a human body is a creative act that we are involved in at every moment. This animating is affected by how we creatively use attention.

Golden Key

The key is to pay attention to your own vitality.

Here’s today’s exercise:

Notice through the day what you pay attention to. How much attention is on the internal body activity, as compared with the senses, as compared with thought, as compared with physical sensations. Is attention mainly concentrated in one part of the body–the head, the stomach, the feet–where?

Bob Klein’s book is an amazing window to developing internal power and vitality. It’s a good read. Get it now.
